Our Purpose

We provide much more than funding or information. We provide individuals with developmental disabilities with the opportunity to have fun, be active, socialize, gain independence and discover their life’s passion. Many individuals with developmental disabilities are isolated in school or in the community, and our programs provide the opportunity to make friends while doing something they enjoy, without expectation or comparison. We enable individuals with disabilities to enjoy life.

The Recreation Council of Greater St. Louis is committed to serving individuals and groups from all realms of life regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and veteran or disability status.  The Council values and supports diversity and inclusion in the communities we serve and considers our organization stronger and richer for doing so.   Furthermore, we believe in equality and justice for all and commend all those who work toward these means.

Our Mission

We aim to connect individuals of all ages with developmental disabilities with a variety of recreation activities and programs across the greater St. Louis area. We work to ensure individuals are aware of and have access through funding to recreation opportunities, including community inclusive recreation programs, specialized city programs and camps and other community resources. Through these connections, we encourage them to build communities of their own.

Our Approach

Our staff takes a personal approach, working with each individual — whether it be a caregiver or self-advocate — to identify programs in their community that best meet their interests and support needs. To find those that might be the best fit, our staff will take the time to ask questions and gather information. We make ourselves available to address questions and provide additional information on programs and funding.
