Click HERE to request access to a training for recreation providers on creating inclusive programs. You must be an agency providing services in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and/or St. Charles County. Training is done by Lisa Drennan, owner of Merge Consulting. Below are some of her thoughts on inclusion.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the word INCLUSION. The definition is “the action or state of including or of being included within a group” which implies that the group would have the function of doing the including. As this applies to the work of MERGE, that would refer to the community organization (camp, rec program, library, sports team, etc.). Which, looking from the “other side of the bridge” it does not mean that the individual being included (or their support agency) is responsible for the action of creating inclusive programs. In order to achieve authentic community membership, only the community can do the including. Let’s work together to give community organizations the tools and confidence to welcome persons with disabilities into existing groups.” Lisa Drennan, MERGE Founder
